A few weeks ago we went hiking once again, – because cannot be anything better to do on a public holiday in the middle of the week! (…well, okay, maybe sleeping in would be a good option, too ;)) This time, we went to Mt. Oyama in Kanagawa Prefecture, which is said to be the second most popular hiking destination for Tokyo’s stressed residents, – right after Mt. Takeo in Tokyo Prefecture and before number three, Mt. Tsukuba in Ibaraki. No wonder that Mt. Oyama is so popular, as it is quite easy to go there from Shinjuku via the Odakyu train line. That is an advantage, but, as you might guess, the disadvantage is that the mountain attracts many many visitors, especially on weekends!
The hike itself is quite nice and even good for training the legs: About 70 percent of the way consists only of stairs, and the 2.5 hours to the summit are quite exhausting overall, due to the steepness of the trail. For the less motivated people there is also the option to ride a cable car, which makes the hike shorter by about an hour, but this requires patient and long queuing, as well.
Anyway, after managing to climb up all the stairs and the steep trail, you can enjoy a really nice view up to Kamakura and Enoshima (and if you are there on an especially cloudless day, you might even see Mt. Fuji somewhere in the distance – but unfortunately we were not as lucky). Overall, the hike was exhausting, but quite fun, and because of the many temples on the way to the top it never got boring. A big plus is also the fact that you can buy warm food on top of the mountain! There is nothing better than eating a couple of warm soba noodles in the fresh autumn breeze! Only the many other visitors can be a bit tiring, especially if you have originally planned to experience some nature in order to get away from Tokyo’s masses of people..;)
